Jesus Calms the Storm: A Lesson on Fear and Trust for Kids

Kids discover what to do when they feel scared by exploring the story of Jesus calming the storm. Through Mark 4:35-41, they learn that Jesus is with them in every frightening moment — and that they can talk to Him about it.

Jesus was right there in the boat with His scared friends — He doesn't disappear when things get scary. The disciples forgot who was with them. We can remind ourselves that Jesus is with us too. When we're afraid, we can tell Jesus how we feel and trust that He is bigger than anything that scares us.

Scripture

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, 'Let us go over to the other side.' Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, 'Teacher, don't you care if we drown?' He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?' They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!'

Mark 4:35-41 (NIV)

Getting Started

Before you start: This story can feel abstract to kids unless you ground it in something real. Think about what genuinely scares elementary-age kids — thunderstorms at night, a parent getting sick, starting a new school, a scary dream. You'll want to name one or two of those out loud during your teaching so kids feel seen, not lectured at. One important nuance here: Jesus doesn't scold the disciples for being scared — He asks why they forgot their faith. That's a gentle distinction worth holding onto. Being afraid is not a sin. Forgetting that Jesus is with us is the thing to gently address. Tip: If you have a naturally anxious kid in your group, be careful not to frame this as 'you just need more faith and you won't be scared.' The goal is comfort and trust, not shame.

Jesus Is in the Boat With You

Let's picture what this night was really like for the disciples. These guys were experienced fishermen — some of them had grown up on this lake. They knew what a bad storm looked like. And when they said the boat was almost swamped, they meant it. Water crashing in. Waves taller than their heads. They genuinely thought they were going to die. And where was Jesus? Asleep. On a cushion. In the back of the boat. Now here's the thing that I want you to notice: Jesus was not somewhere else. He didn't stay on the shore while they sailed off into danger. He was IN THE BOAT. Right there with them. The whole time. But the disciples panicked and forgot that. In the middle of the storm, all they could see was the waves. They stopped thinking about who was right there with them. Here's something to think about: Have you ever been scared — maybe during a thunderstorm at night, or when you found out someone you love was sick — and you felt totally alone? Like nobody understood how scary it was? The disciples felt that way. And Jesus' question afterward — 'Why were you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?' — wasn't mean. It was more like a gentle reminder. It was like He was saying, 'Hey. I was right here. Did you forget?' So what do we do when we're scared? Here's what this story shows us: - **You're allowed to tell Jesus you're scared.** The disciples literally woke Him up and told Him exactly what was happening. That's prayer. You can do that too. - **You can remind yourself: Jesus is in the boat.** Not far away. Not too busy. Right there. - **You don't have to make the storm stop yourself.** Jesus did that part. Your job is to trust the One who can. Being afraid doesn't mean you have bad faith. Even the disciples — Jesus' closest friends — were terrified. But fear is a signal to turn toward Jesus, not away from Him.

Discussion Questions

  1. 1.What's something that scares you? It could be something big like a storm, or something smaller like the dark or a loud noise.
  2. 2.The disciples were really scared even though Jesus was right there in the boat. Why do you think they forgot He was with them?
  3. 3.When Jesus woke up, what did He do first — did He explain things, or did He just fix it? What does that tell you about Him?
  4. 4.If Jesus asked you right now, 'Why are you afraid? Do you trust me?' — what do you think you would say to Him?(optional)
  5. 5.The disciples asked each other, 'Who is this that even the wind and waves obey him?' What would YOU say if someone asked you who Jesus is?(optional)

Activity — Storm in a Cup

craft10 min

Give each kid a clear plastic cup about halfway filled with water. Tell them this cup is their 'boat.' Have them tear up small pieces of blue paper and drop them in to represent waves — the scary stuff. Then give each kid a tiny paper figure (or just a popsicle stick) to represent Jesus, and have them place it in the cup. Ask: 'Is Jesus in the boat with you? Yes! Even when the water is rough and the waves are high, is He still there?' Let them stir the water and watch the waves — Jesus (the stick) moves with the boat but doesn't fall out. Then hand each kid a small strip of paper. Ask them to write or draw one thing that scares them — they don't have to share it. Then fold the paper up, put it in the cup under the Jesus figure, and say: 'You just put your fear under Jesus. That's what prayer is. You can bring your scary thing to Him.' Optionally let kids take their cup home as a reminder.

Take a Moment to Think

  • This week, when you feel scared about something, what's one thing you can remind yourself about Jesus?
  • Is there something you've been afraid to talk to Jesus about? What would it look like to actually tell Him about it — even just in your head on the way home today?
  • The disciples asked, 'Who is this?' after seeing what Jesus did. How does knowing Jesus can calm a storm change the way you think about your fears?

Closing

Close with a simple, honest prayer that names fear directly — don't be vague. Something like: 'Jesus, we know that You were in the boat with the disciples, and we believe You are with us too. Some of us are scared about things we haven't even told anyone. You already know. Help us remember this week that You are right there — not far away, not asleep forever, but with us. When the waves feel too big, help us turn toward You instead of away. Amen.' If your group is comfortable with it, you could invite kids to silently name one fear in their heart before you say amen — give them 10 seconds of quiet for that.
